Labour supply in the long-term scenarios for the Netherlands

This publication presents the main features of labour supply in four long term scenarios for the Netherlands.

The demographic framework was taken from an accompanying study by Statistics Netherlands and RIVM. This study provides divergent pictures on the potential labour force in the decades to come. Given varying assumptions on socio-cultural trends and policy changes, projections of labour force participation in the different scenarios have been drawn up. The combination of potential labour force and participation has resulted in labour supply up till 2040 in the four scenarios.

Demographic changes appear to have a negative effect on labour supply in three out of four scenarios, while increasing participation makes a positive contribution in all scenarios. On balance, in three scenarios, future labour supply will increase, though much slower than over the past decades.
