CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis is a research institute that is independent with respect to content, but at the same time CPB is formally part of the central government.
CPB's funding takes place from public resources from the budget of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

CPB has its own independent external advisory body, the Central Planning Committee. The CPC reviews CPB's work plan and provides advice about priorities in this plan.

CPB is legally based on the law of April 21st, 1947.

Besides CPB, there are other planning offices. They all have their own lines of approach:

• Social and Cultural Planning Office (SCP),
• The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (MNP), and
• Spatial Planning office (RPB)
