Activities

I work as a researcher at CPB and the Spatial Economics department of VU University, and I am an associate of the Spatial Economics Research Centre based at the London School of Economics.

My fields of interest are housing supply and land use regulation, which I approach from both positive and normative angels. Empirical work that I have done for the Netherlands suggests that in this country, housing supply is almost fully inelastic with respect to prices and that planning largely shapes the spatial distribution of population and employment growth. In a new joint project with Christian Hilber (LSE), we will investigate the impact of land use regulation on UK housing markets. The welfare economic evaluation of such effects are a second main thread in my research. Currently, I am particularly interested in how agglomeration externalities should enter in these evaluations.
