Almost any decision made by policymakers in government and business is based on a view of the future. A long-term view is often required in deciding about government policies such as the environment, energy, physical planning, international cooperation, education and social security. A long time horizon is also required for business decisions on issues such as large and durable investments, expensive R&D programmes, the location of production, the core business of the firm and the strategic alliances. The CPB long-term study which has a time horizon of twenty-five years tries to provide informntion wich can be usuful when taking these kinds of decisions.
