Bringing up to date and revising the CPB leading indicator

This document provides an integral description of the new CPB leading indicator system, which has been operational since the Macro Economic Outlook 2004.

Since 1990, CPB has used a leading indicator system in making short-term forecasts for the Dutch economy. In comparison with other national and international leading indicators, the CPB system has some unique characteristics. For example, the CPB leading indicator system consists of ten separate indicators, seven for expenditure categories (demand side) and three for production sectors (supply side). Recently, CPB revised the applied methods and filter techniques. Simultaneously, all potential indicator series were tested for their leading character. The revised and up-to-date CPB leading indicator now uses 25 different indicator series.
