Abstract subject We discuss the role of local and national governments' policy on the car parking market. In addition, we estimate the welfare consequences of distortionary policy. For example, we discuss the welfare estimates of not taxing parking spaces that are freely supplied by employers, the provision of residential parking permits in 300 shopping areas in the Netherlands, cruising for parking, nonoptimal setting of street prices parking.
