Abstract subject: In this seminar, we present results on the performance of long-term care (LTC) systems in 13 European countries. This research is part of the international ANCIEN-project, a broad European study into LTC for the elderly, executed within the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union. In this session we concentrate on the experience of LTC users that are 65 years or older and their quality of life. Using data from the second wave of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we study the probability of receiving help for elderly with limitations, the degree to which this help meets their needs and their life satisfaction. The aim of analysing life satisfaction is to determine to what extent the LTC system in different countries can compensate for the loss of life satisfaction that accompanies limitations in instrumental and basic activities of daily living. To compare life satisfaction across countries and persons with and without limitations in a meaningful way, we correct for response scale differences by using the anchoring vignettes included in SHARE. Based on this analysis, we draw conclusions on the performance of LTC systems in different countries. We find that there are substantial differences among countries in the probability of receiving help and the sufficiency of this help. Moreover, the impact of the LTC system on the life satisfaction of residents differs between countries.
