Abstract subject:
This paper investigates the effect of delinquent behaviour on school leaving. Using information on males from the extremely rich National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, and focusing on the first instance in which an individual engages in delinquency and leaves school, we disentangle the direction of causality in the relationship between delinquency and school leaving. We find no evidence of a causal effect of school leaving on the initiation of delinquency; however, prior delinquency is found to causally increase an individual’s transition rate out of school. Importantly, this effect is robust to accounting for arrest, indicating that the adverse effect of delinquency on school leaving is not confined to those who have been arrested. Further analysis reveals the effect of delinquency on school leaving to be driven by the initiation of income generating acts of delinquency.
