This paper investigates how risk preferences change over the life cycle. Age patterns are generally difficult to identify because they may also reveal changes across cohorts or periods of observation. We compare representative panel data sets from the Netherlands and Germany. The main results of this different approaches to this identification problem using large exploration indicate that risk preferences decrease linearly with age. Our results also show that the gender difference in risk preferences remains of approximately equal size across age.
